The Estate

The Pyrenees Cirque

Situated in the municipalities of LA VAJOL and AGULLANA in at only 8 kilometres from LA JONQUERA, the estate extends to nearly 200 hectares situated at an altitude of between 500m to 900m, near the border in the northern part with France. The vast territory is mainly covered with Holm oak, sessile oak, cork oak and chestnut trees, creating a preserved and authentic natural environment. The Estate comprises two adjoining properties Can-Quera and Can Comaulis, whose buildings constructed entirely of granite, are typical of the local architecture. In the main house, some lintels bear witness to constructions dating back to 1644, suggesting an even earlier history.

The estate forms a natural crescent-shaped amphitheatre facing south on the slopes of the Pyrénées. The geographical configuration offers natural protection against the Tramontine, a cold wind from the North. Conversely, the buildings open onto a spectacular view of the sea and the Bay of Roses creating a striking contrast between the mountains and the Mediterranean.

Every morning, from September onwards, the estate awakens to the rhythm of magnificent sunrises, offering a daily spectacle that underlines the unique and privileged character of this timeless place.

A family’s winemaking adventure

After selling their property in France, Marie and Denis Barthélémy began searching for a new home and project in Catalonia. After numerous visits without finding a property they truly loved, they finally discovered Finca Can Quera nestled in the mountains near La Jonquera. From the very first visit, it was clear that the property met all their criteria: absolute tranquillity, beautiful, perfectly preserved stone buildings and an exceptional panorama offering breathtaking views of the mountains and the sea.
They purchased the property in 2019. At that time, they did not have a winemaking project in mind.

It was only after the purchase that the owners discovered the farm was surrounded by numerous agricultural terraces, most of which were abandoned for over a century.
This unique landscape immediately reminded Denis, a great wine enthusiast, of the Cote-Rôtie biotope in France. Clearing work began revealing superb south facing terraces. Soil analyses were carried out and confirmed remarkable potential. That was all it took to ignite a passion for winemaking…. The project is taking shape.

During one of her visits, their daughter Marie-Gaëlle, then living and working in Bordeaux, also fell under the spell of Can Quera. Driven by the same passion, she decided without hesitation to leave her job and retrain in winemaking. She successfully obtained a BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma) in Viticulture and oenology in Bordeaux while simultaneously working three harvest and winemaking seasons at one of Bordeaux’s larger estates, which own several Grands Crus Classés. Today, Marie-Gaëlle manages and develops the Can Quera estate.
